Analysis Of `` The Breakbeat Poets `` By Langston Hughes,...

Think of a poet. Who came to mind? Was it Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, Ralph Waldo Emerson? What about Eminem or Jay-Z? They are both poets too, but in a different way. They go by the title â€Å"rapper†, basically a synonym for poet, and Hip-Hop is their form of poetry is. Kevin Coval amusingly says that rap â€Å"dusted poetry off, took it out the closet, put Js on its feet, and told it to speak to the people, all the people,† and that hip-hop saved poetry from becoming â€Å"classical music,† meaning that rap prevented poetry from becoming an old, out-dated art form and renovated it for the next generation (20). Coval’s book, The BreakBeat Poets, says the creation of hip-hop music was by â€Å"latchkey kids in the crack era, left to their own devices to experiment wildly and make language and art new and meaningful,† and goes on to say its purpose is to, â€Å"move the crowd, relate to the crowd, and save the crowd,† and Kendrick Lamar do es these things perfectly (18). Through the use of clever wordplay and rhyming skills mixed with great story telling, Kendrick is bringing rap music back to its â€Å"roots† while introducing a â€Å"style† of his own, which is why one can argue that Kendrick Lamar is the â€Å"savior† of the rap game and its listeners. Kendrick brings rap back to its â€Å"roots† by reintroducing the narrative aspect of old school rap. When rap was first taking off in the late eighties, one group in particular helped mainstream it, N.W.A. Consisting of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Easy-E, this group

Essay about The Portrayal of Schizophrenia in Me, Myself,...

Most people gather what they know about mental illnesses from television and film. Unfortunately these media portrayals are inaccurate and create stigma. They depict people suffering from mental illnesses as different, dangerous and laughable. Characters are often addicted to drugs or alcohol, are violent, dangerous, or out of control. Horror film characters like Norman Bates in Psycho, Jack Torrance in the Shining, or Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs associate the typical psycho- killer with people who suffer from a mental illness. But dramas and horror films are not the only film genres that create stigma. Comedies like What About Bob and many others not only stigmatize, they also make fun of mental illnesses and the people†¦show more content†¦It promotes misinformation either out of ignorance or to make for a more entertaining story by identifying Carrey’s character as schizophrenic versus the correct diagnosis of multiple personality disorder. It stereotyp es schizophrenia as a battle within us between good and evil. Hanks character exaggerates the perception that people with mental illness are violent even though violence is not a symptom of schizophrenia. Even the movie’s tagline reads â€Å"From Gentle to Mental† and again equates mental illness with violent behavior. What I found most troubling is how the movie portrays schizophrenia, its symptoms and treatments as a joke. In one scene Carrey’s character is diagnosed as having â€Å"advanced delusionary schizophrenia with involuntary narcissistic rage.† It also should be noted that Fox marketers distributed white jelly-bean â€Å"pills† that supposedly cure schizophrenia at the films premiere. The bottle’s label warns that side effects include â€Å"genital elephantisis.† The effect of this film could seriously affect the lives, behavior and medical compliance of those with existing conditions. The film also targets age groups that are most at risk from showing early signs of illness. But who would want to seek help for any distressing feelings they have when they know that mental illness is the object of ridicule and believe it to be embarrassing or shameful. Because of the stigma created by films like Me Myself and Irene, it isShow MoreRelatedEssay Media Madness1389 Words   |  6 Pagesseriousness of mental illnesses often view the media portrayals as offensive, inaccurate, and stigmatizing, and they have every reason to feel that way. Schizophrenia is very serious but popular illness of choice for many filmmakers. However, how often do they get it right? And how often do they get it wrong? Many people confuse schizophrenia with split personality or multiple personality disorder (Lilienfeld et al, 2010). The misunderstanding stems from the meaning of the word schizophrenia, as in Greek it means split mind (Boruck, 2008). In 1990, Carlson proposed â€Å"schizophrenia is probably the most misused psychological term in existence† . If the student misses any lectures given by their teachers can be recorded in the voice recorder and can listen to the lectures given by the teacher after the lecture gets end. Marijuana A New Medicine Essays - Herbalism, Medicinal Plants

Marijuana: A New Medicine? Marijuana: A new medicine? In society today, there are many serious diseases that plague nations all across the world. Diseases like Glaucoma, Epilepsy, Parkinsons disease, and migraine headaches. What do all of these serious illnesses have in common? Every one of theses sicknesses can be cured or helped by the use of Marijuana. Throughout this paper I will discuss the positive aspects of Marijuana and the negative aspects. This issue has been raising a lot of eyebrows ever since scientific evidence has been provided that links Marijuana to the cure and decrease of certain illnesses. The main reason that Marijuana has been looked down upon by so many people for so long is because many individuals abuse the drug. An obvious setback to legalizing marijuana for medicinal uses is that the number of people that abuse the drug will undoubtedly increase. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, and there is an estimated 67 million people affected by this disease in the world today (National Academy of Sciences.) Effective treatment for glaucoma involves pharmaceutical agents or surgical procedures that prevent progressive optic nerve damage. For surgery to be an effective way of therapy, a drug or surgical procedure that reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) must do so without causing more damage to the eye. Marijuana can reduce IOP when administrated orally, or by inhalation (Marijuana and Medicine.). Marijuana is a natural way to slow down the progression of glaucoma. Marijuana should be legalized in all states just for the main purpose of helping those who are infected with the serious disease of Glaucoma. Sixty percent of people who are affected by epilepsy can benefit from Marijuana. To this day it is still considered to be the best medication for many types of epilepsy and for most victims that have epileptic seizures. The use of Marijuana for epilepsy is not fully understood yet. Scientist don't know all of the facts about the use of Marijuana for a disease such as epilepsy. They have concluded that Marijuana enables Neurons, which are the brain cells that process information, to communicate with each other by the release of Neurons into the gaps of the brain. Most doctors will only prescribe the drug to epileptic patient s if that certain patient has serious cases of epilepsy. Parkinsons disease, a degenerative disease, affects about 1 million Americans over 50 (Marijuana and Medicine). Theoretically, marijuana could be useful for treating Parkinsons patients, because marijuana specifically inhibits the pathways between the nucleus (marijuana and medicine). There is one published clinical trial that I found in my research of the affects of marijuana for Parkinsons. That trial was prompted by a patients report that smoking marijuana reduced tremors, but the investigators found no improvement in tremors after five-patients smoked marijuana. Although new data might someday indicate a helpfulness for Marijuana to a Parkinsons patient. There is a clear need for improved migraine medications. Imitrex is the best available medication for migraine headaches, but it fails to abolish migraine symptoms in about 30 percent of migraine patients (Marijuana Aids in Migraines.) Marijuana has been proposed numerous times as a treatment for migraine headaches because it relieves the pain, but there is almost no clinical data on the use of marijuana on migraines. Among efforts to study marijuana was a preliminary study conducted in New York on 56 cancer patients who were unresponsive to anathematic agents (Marijuana and Medicine.) The patients were asked to rate the effectiveness of marijuana compared with the results during prior chemotherapy cycles. In this survey, 34 percent of patients rated marijuana as moderately or highly effective to reduce the pain that cancer patients may have (Marijuana and Medicine). Like smoking cigarettes, marijuana kills brain cells and damages your lungs. Lung cancer is a serious disease and people who smoke marijuana on a regular basis have a higher chance of getting lung cancer. Medical marijuana doctors say that it is alright for patients, because patients do not use it regularly. Marijuana was first used as a herbal medicine for the Chinese Emperor Shen in 2737 B.C. Marijuana has been used for a long time and it has proven to be one of
